Sean Campbell, Young Author
"Age Doesn't Matter: Becoming a Young Writer"
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
DDMS Auditorium (Open To All)
On September 24, 2008, Sean Campbell, 19-year old published author, nationwide motivational speaker, and entrepreneur will visit Davis Drive Middle School in Cary, NC. Sean Campbell grew up in Northern New Jersey, and at the age of sixteen, signed his first publishing contract with McFarland & Company, Inc., one of the nation's leading scholarly, reference and academic publishers (located in Jefferson, NC). In October 2006, Sean published The Sitcoms of Norman Lear, a scholarly examination of how legendary television producer Norman Lear's situation comedies of the 1970s (e.g. All in the Family, Good Times, The Jeffersons) positively influenced American culture and future television. Before Sean graduated high school, The Sitcoms of Norman Lear was sitting in Harvard and Yale University libraries, and he was taking part in book signings in Barnes and Noble. Sean will be hosting his "Age Doesn't Matter: Becoming a Young Writer" program, in which he shows students exactly what it took for him to publish his book. Sean talks about getting an idea to write a book, shows the importance of extensive research and intense editing, warns against the dangers of plagiarism, and discusses how to attract the interest of literary agents and publishers. He shows students the stack of nearly 70 rejection letters he received before having a publisher show interest in his book, and stresses the importance of positive thinking and visualization in achieving any goal. Finally, Sean motivates all students, no matter what their backgrounds or interests, to start pursuing their most ambitious goals at a young age, just like he did. Sean is currently spreading his "Age Doesn't Matter" message to students across America. At the same time, Sean also attends the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College in New York City on a full scholarship."
Our next PTA Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 21, at 7 pm in the Media Center. All are welcome to attend.
